Gift Repurposing for life, environment and economy

Recently faced with the question in this down-turn, when many are short on money, should we discontinue Christmas gifts within the family?  I contempleted this response......
As for the gifts, my suggestion would not be to eliminate a family exchange, but repurpose it.  What I mean is keep it to something hand-made or repurposed from your current assets or purchased used, but to give it new life and meaning in a different household.  Low dollar amount but with a new purpose or gag to stimulate a good time.  When you think about it, how great is a gift you can give someone else, than something that has meant allot, has or is helping your family.  In today's life when spare time is in such short supply, what better gift can someone give than something they took their own time to make?

I guess I have two conflicts dwelling within me.  One as a retailer I hate to see people stop buying, I understand it, but at the same time it limits our economic growth.  On the other hand as a nation and people we have been extremely wasteful and careless, we need to purchase wiser and waste less.  We were walking through a major retailer in early October and came across a end display of ceramic pumpkins, it kind of struck our eye, because we had a similar pumpkin in our store that someone had consigned for sale.  The one we had was in like new condition, just did not have a home any more and was looking for a new purpose and was less than half the price of the new ones.  I made a comment, 'the irony is that this major retailer will sell that whole display of new ones and we will probably not sell our one pumpkin for less than half the price'.  Sad to say, my prediction came true.  A couple weeks later their display of new ones was empty and we still have our one that was perfectly fine for half the price left today.  Convenience, Marketing, wide product selection in one place all are a factor, but I will argue there is still a mental paradigm that needs to change in people of buying quality used economic items and repurposing vs. getting a new one.

Consider your Holiday Gift list and what can you Repurpose for Life....
